Gao Dongliang, the sole survivor of a suicidal mission to kill the Japanese Emperor's brother, infiltrates Fang's bandits. He plans to use their expertise to complete his patriotic mission. But Fang has his own agenda: to kidnap the brother of the Emperor alive and ransom him back to the Japanese for gold. But for once he's misjudged the odds, and the consequences.

Zhao Wei and Huang Xiaoming introducing the project "Underground Resistance" (Dec. 2010):

Update from 21 April 2011 by Film Business Asia:

Production of time travel romance Underground Resistance 時空地道 has been halted as producers reassess the film's viability following casting and script changes.

The film was revealed at a starry press conference in late December in Tianjin where it received particular attention for marking the return of actress Vicki ZHAO 趙薇 to the big screen after giving birth to a daughter last April.

It was announced that the film would start production in February with Shanghai-based LI Xin 李欣 directing from his own script, a dream project that he had been developing for close to a decade.

The film hit its first speed bump when Zhao pulled out before production began to focus on a 1930s set adventure film opposite Andy Lau (劉德華) and Lin Chih-ling (林志玲). That project is also believed to have stalled.

In late February, Li Xin was replaced by Leon Yang (楊樹鵬), also under contract to Hsu Hsiao-ming's (徐小明) Tempo Films (天寶華映影業投資有限公司) who were co-producing with Huayi Brothers (華誼兄弟傳媒股份有限公司).

Without a leading lady to star opposite Huayi's Huang Xiaoming (黃曉明), and with reservations over script changes made by Yang, production of the film has been stopped and it is unlikely to resume this year.

Underground Resistance is not believed to be a victim of the State Administration for Radio, Film & Television's (國家廣播電影電視總局) stronger stance on films using time travel as a plot device that are disrespectful of China's history.

It had been pre-sold in some Asian territories, including Singapore.

This comes after three years of production that has amounted to millions of Yuan in production costs. Only recently did David Stern and the NBA authorize promotional activities for “Amazing”, which will begin airing during the NBA finals, just a bit ahead of its summer release 2012, however this has been moved to summer 2013 where the movie has been nominated for the Golden Goblet Award at the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival.

The hope of this movie, according to a representative of Shanghai Film Group, is to experiment with a new movie genre that will be more in tune with young people as this market audience begins to lose interest in fictional costume movies (古裝大片).
